A status program categorizes customers into tiers based on value and activity (e.g., Bronze, Silver, Gold). Higher tiers offer better benefits—this helps retain top customers and motivates mid-tier customers to move up. PRODATA designs and operates status programs with its own loyalty engine, app/wallet, and rewards logistics.
- Levels: typically 3–4 (clear and engaging)
- Criteria: Revenue, Points, or Activity
- Benefits: exclusive, tangible, with incentives for advancement
- Technology: Loyalty engine with open API, CRM/ERP integration
One-Stop Implementation: As a full-service agency and software developer with its own ProLoyalty platform, PRODATA (Karlsruhe, since 1991) implements customer loyalty programs—multilingual and multi-currency, with rollouts in over 30 countries and scalability up to 20 million participants.
What is a status program (tiering)?
A status program—also known as a tiered program—classifies customers into tiers based on their behavior (sales, points earned, or activity). Each higher tier offers better benefits. Unlike a pure points program, which rewards individual purchases, a status program rewards cumulative behavior over a period of time—thereby creating a lasting incentive to buy more and remain loyal.

Status tiers leverage proven psychological effects: visible progress toward the next tier, a sense of exclusivity at higher tiers, and the motivation to avoid losing a status that has been achieved. This increases the purchase frequency and average order value of the most valuable customers and makes customer retention predictable.
Chapter 03The Right Tiered Approach: Criteria and Number of Tiers
Three to four tiers have generally proven effective—enough differentiation to provide a tangible incentive for advancement, yet simple enough to remain easy to understand. It’s important to have clear, fair criteria (sales, points, or activity), transparent communication of progress, and a realistic yet rewarding path to advancement.
| Level | Example Criterion | Typical Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze (Beginner) | Upon registration | Base Points, Welcome Bonus |
| Silver | Starting at a defined annual sales figure/point total | Higher points-to-spend ratio, exclusive promotions |
| Gold | Top Sales/Activity | Premium Service, Priority, Special Rewards |
Make the benefits of each level appealing
The benefits must become noticeably better with each tier: higher point rates, exclusive promotions, premium service, priority treatment, or special rewards. It’s crucial that the highest tier offers true exclusivity—and that the leap from one tier to the next is worth it.

Status Program vs. Points Program—and the Combination
Rewards and status programs are not mutually exclusive. Often, the combination is most effective: Customers earn points toward specific rewards (Earn & Burn) while simultaneously advancing in status, which provides ongoing exclusive benefits. This approach addresses both short-term purchasing incentives and long-term customer loyalty.
Chapter 06Upgrade, Hold, and Downgrade Rules
Clear rules ensure fairness and motivation: How is a tier achieved, how long does it last, and what happens if activity declines? Gentle downgrade rules (e.g., maintaining status for one year) keep customers active without penalizing them. Rolling evaluation periods are usually fairer than fixed cut-off dates.
Chapter 07Technical Implementation: Engine, Data, and Integration
Technically, a loyalty engine maps out the tiered logic: It analyzes sales, points, and activity data and automatically assigns customers to the correct tier. PRODATA provides this engine with an open API and integrates it into CRM, ERP, and point-of-sale systems, as well as into apps and mobile wallets—ensuring that the status is visible and actionable at every touchpoint.
Chapter 08Personalization and Communication
A status program thrives on communication: Customers should know where they stand, what the next step entails, and what benefits they currently have. Personalized notifications (“Only €200 left to reach Gold”) and a transparent status dashboard in the app significantly boost the program’s impact.

Customer management software processes customer data—data protection and fairness are mandatory. PRODATA is ISO 27001-certified; hosting takes place in Germany on TISAX-compliant Azure infrastructure that is GDPR-compliant. Data is collected with consent and processed for specific purposes.
Chapter 10Measurable ROI and Reporting
Key metrics such as the promotion rate, status distribution, purchase frequency, and customer lifetime value by tier show whether the program is effective. Easy-to-understand dashboards enable data-driven management—from adjusting criteria to designing rewards.
Chapter 11From Concept to Rollout
A phased rollout has proven effective: concept and phased implementation, pilot, evaluation, and scaling. Because PRODATA provides the strategy, technology, and operations in-house, the rollout remains predictable—even with large numbers of participants, and with support for multiple languages and currencies.
